How to do a traceroute or tracert
Solution Occasionally we may ask for a "traceroute" or a "tracert" when troubleshooting a problem which shows us the exact path that your connection is taking to our server from your own system, through your ISP and the internet in general. It is essential that traceroutes are done from your own computer and not a website elsewhere on the internet.

To do a traceroute on a computer running Microsoft Windows:
Open up ms-dos by clicking Start in Windows, then Run, enter 'cmd' in the box and click OK.
A new window will open with a black background, type the following to run the traceroute:
tracert domain.com
Replace "domain.com" with the domain or IP address of the server you are hosted on, or with the details you are asked to the traceroute with.

To do a traceroute on a Mac:
From your hard-drive, open the Applications folder, and click to open the Utilities folder.
Double-click Terminal.
Type the following to run the traceroute:
traceroute domain.com
Replace "domain.com" with the domain or IP address of the server you are hosted on, or with the details you are asked to the traceroute with.

When complete, you can select the output and paste it to a text file to attach in a support ticket to us.
